The research team at Hampshire Hospitals is celebrating a major win, with Professor John Ramage, deputy research director, having been presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the UK and Ireland Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (UKINETS)
It is the first time in 12 years this award has been given out which makes Professor Ramage’s achievement even more significant.
A consultant physician in gastroenterology and hepatology, Professor Ramage’s main research interest is in quality of life and symptoms scores in neuroendocrine tumours of the small bowel and liver. Over two decades he has acted as the chief investigator on 154 studies, and principal investigator on 221 studies. He joined Hampshire Hospitals in 1996 and has combined clinical and research work throughout his career.
Speaking about his award, Professor Ramage says: ““I feel very honoured to have been presented with this recognition; it represents a great deal of hard work over many decades from people in the HHFT NET team as well as the Hampshire Hospitals’ research team.
“Focussed, quality research is fundamental to securing the progress in diagnosis and treatment that will ultimately improve patient outcomes.”
Neuroendocrine tumour is an umbrella term for a group of relatively uncommon cancers. Around 4,000 new cases are diagnosed every year in the UK. The society, which Professor Ramage helped to establish in the late 1990s, brings together healthcare experts so that they can collaborate, share experience, highlight areas for development, and support research.

Background on Professor Ramage
Professor John Ramage is lead clinician for the Hampshire Collaboration for Health Research and Education and was until recently was on the executive board of the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society. He is a member of the EORTC Quality of Life Group, through which he pursues research into quality of life in cancers.
Professor Ramage is an honorary consultant physician at the Institute of Liver Studies, King’s College Hospital and was until recently lead clinician for King’s Health Partners NET Centre which includes King’s, Guys and St Thomas’s, Kent Oncology Centre, and Hampshire Hospitals.
He is chief investigator for several UK and international studies and worked on Hampshire Hospitals’ input into the RECOVERY study for COVID-19. He has taken part in the webinars on COVID-19 and NET patients for ENETS and has co-authored the UKINETS statement on this topic.
