Three Mid and South Essex NHS Hospitals Enhance Sonography Workflows with Support from HNC

by Leah

Three hospitals across Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust have improved efficiency, reporting and clinical workflows within their sonography departments following the successful delivery of a major digital transformation project with Health Net Connections Ltd (HNC).

By streamlining ultrasound reporting and enabling faster access to accurate patient information, the new integrated workflows are helping clinicians make more timely decisions, supporting high-quality maternity care and improved fetal wellbeing.

The project was part of the expansion and implementation of ViewPoint 6, an ultrasound reporting and workflow management solution, designed to streamline sonography services, improve clinical reporting and support connected maternity and fetal medicine care.

Delivered over a three-week period in two carefully planned phases, the project included:

  • Broomfield Hospital – expansion of ViewPoint 6 into the Antenatal Clinic and Maternity Unit.
  • Basildon Hospital – upgrade from ViewPoint 5 to ViewPoint 6 across the Fetal Medicine, Maternity Unit and Early Pregnancy Unit.
  • Southend University Hospital – implementation of ViewPoint 6, replacing a legacy reporting system.

The deployment introduced a fully integrated Order Management workflow, enabling seamless connectivity between ViewPoint 6 and third-party clinical systems through inbound and outbound HL7 interfaces.

The new integrated workflow has transformed the way patient information and ultrasound reports are managed across the Trust.

The implementation introduced integrated digital workflows that automate patient data exchange and report distribution between clinical systems. By replacing disconnected manual processes, the Trust has established a more accurate, efficient and connected sonography reporting environment across all three hospitals.

Clinicians can now access ultrasound reports through a centralised platform, reducing the need to switch between multiple systems and improving visibility across departments. ViewPoint 6 also provides built-in analytics and statistical reporting, helping teams meet clinical governance and professional reporting requirements more efficiently.

The enhanced workflow has increased confidence in the sonography service by providing a more reliable and resilient platform for staff. Faster access to information, improved system stability and streamlined processes support more timely clinical decision-making, contributing to a smoother patient journey and improved maternity and fetal care.

Olivia Ionescu, Consultant in Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics at Broomfield Hospital said:

“Viewpoint6 has significantly streamlined the collaboration and workflow between the screening ultrasound department and the fetal medicine units which has brought a noticeable difference to our day-to-day practice saving us time and removing all the inaccuracies we used to face when we used different systems to report scan findings.”

She added:

“ViewPoint 6 now reflects our clinical activity more effectively, providing a reliable and efficient platform that supports both our clinicians and patients. HNC’s collaborative approach, technical expertise and commitment to understanding our requirements have made a real difference, and we are delighted with the outcome.”
