Three of the UK’s leading eye surgeons have teamed up to launch a new clinic in Harley Street Medical Area Ophthalmic Consultants of London (OCL), specialising in laser and lens vision correction surgery.
The private clinic based in New Cavendish Street has been set up by NHS consultant surgeons Ali Mearza, Allon Barsam and Romesh Angunawela – all specialists in laser eye surgery, cataract and lens replacement surgery and corneal transplantation.
Joining the trio is Chief Operating Officer, Juliet Hicks who has led the tri partied merger of the 3 surgeons’ practices and the building project to create the new flagship clinic. The latest clinician to join the team is leading consultant eye surgeon, Sally Ameen, who specialises in cataract surgery and glaucoma treatment.
To support its eminent surgeons, the clinic has invested in the most advanced combination of laser surgery and scanning equipment found anywhere in the UK. With unrivalled surgical expertise and a sophisticated suite of surgical tools, the clinic will offer a fully personalised service for each patient, from the initial consultation to treatment and recovery.
OCL will provide a wide range of eye-related surgical procedures including cataract surgery, LASIK and LASEK laser eye surgery, refractive lens exchange surgery as well as other types of vision correction surgical techniques.
With 55 years’ collective experience in eye surgery, the three founding surgeons have performed more than 20,000 refractive laser and lens procedures and written more than 100 peer-reviewed papers in respected scientific journals.
The three founding partners hold part-time NHS consultant positions in tertiary centres of excellence including Moorfields, Imperial College Healthcare and Luton and Dunstable UCL where they have received excellence awards for complex anterior segment surgery including corneal transplantation.
OCL is the only clinic in London to offer the Z8 LDV Femtosecond laser and the Schwind Amaris 1050RS excimer laser for laser vision correction, some of the most technologically advanced lasers in the world. This combination incorporates more advanced eye tracking and lower energy delivery which in turn increases accuracy and ensures rapid visual recovery.
The clinic also uses advanced optic analytics, scanning and imaging equipment such as the Schwind Peramis Wavefront Scanner, which has three to six times higher resolution than other common systems, the OCULUS Pentacam® for eye segment imaging and the Optovue Optical Coherence Tomography which captures cross-sectional images of the cornea.
Founding director Ali Mearza, who is also clinical director of ophthalmology and lead consultant ophthalmic surgeon at London’s Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “OCL has been conceived and designed to ensure excellence throughout the patient journey, from the initial consultation to treatment and aftercare. That’s why we have invested in the latest innovative technology, with a combination of equipment unique to the clinic. It is a honour to open our doors within Harley Street Medical Area.”
