Synectics introduces AI risk detection for healthcare security and patient safety

Hospitals and other healthcare sites using Synectics’ security and surveillance software, Synergy, can now access a suite of powerful AI-based video analysis tools.

Synectics, a leader in advanced security and surveillance systems, has launched ‘Synergy DETECT’, which is part of Synergy’s AI suite, that allows users to select and activate up to 12 AI-based tools depending on their specific needs.

Fast response to patient falls

Falls are the most reported type of patient safety incident in healthcare, with nearly 250,000 reported annually from acute and community hospitals in England and Wales.

The Fall Detection tool within Synergy DETECT generates an alert if anyone slips on the floor, falls, or lies on the ground. When combined with Synergy’s workflow feature and mobile app, these alerts can be sent to relevant staff members’ devices to provide rapid patient support.

The tool is ideal for monitoring public and communal areas and is an option for private patient areas. It removes the need for continuous manual monitoring in such zones, with surveillance teams only shown the relevant feed when a fall is detected.

Rapid identification of security risks

Another useful tool for hospitals is Intrusion Detection, which can identify and classify people or ground vehicles accessing restricted zones – from staff car parks to drug storage areas, on-site labs, patient rooms and wards.

Hospitals will also be interested in Loitering Detection, which is especially useful for monitoring areas where regular comings and goings by people and vehicles are common – for example, outside a busy A&E, ambulance bays, or staff entrances and exits. The tool can flag suspicious behaviour based on lingering for time periods outside the norm.

Monitor patient parking and emergency access

Synergy DETECT makes detecting, counting, classifying, and tracking vehicle movements simple. This has several possible applications for hospitals.

Multi-Object Detection and Counting tools can notify operators of vehicles in the wrong place or at the wrong time. Similarly, Stopped Vehicle detection can ensure cars aren’t parked in areas that impede emergency access.

The Traffic Counting tool can also monitor incoming and outgoing traffic for a specific zone. This is useful, for example, for alerting operators to parking capacity levels. This information can be used in real-time for overflow parking control and to inform future planning capacity.

Easy set-up, filters, and flexible camera compatibility

Activating Synergy DETECT is simple. Once the hardware is installed, users can connect any of the cameras in their network, including fixed, PTZ and thermal models. The tools can be tailored to suit specific operational needs and re-configured depending on evolving requirements. Settings include zone size, time period, motion tolerances, sensitivity, and alarm frequency thresholds.

Dan Noble, Head of Product Strategy – Synergy, said, “AI truly does have the power to supercharge surveillance-based risk detection, but only if the AI tools themselves are easy and intuitive to use. Synergy DETECT meets this important requirement, putting powerful capabilities at the fingertips of busy hospital and healthcare surveillance teams in a way that is completely tailored to an organisation’s exact needs.”
