Porters are an integral part of any hospital but have you ever wondered how hard their job actually is? And what distance they cover in a day making sure everyone and everything is in the right place at the right time?
Well wonder no more… at Hampshire Hospitals, porters average around 27,000 steps each day – that’s roughly 12 miles making sure patients and equipment get where they need to be, when they need to be there. It’s a tough job and a physically challenging one walking all that way every day – could you do it?
Hampshire Hospitals Charity is inviting local people to take on their Steptember challenge to see if you’ve got what it takes to be a hospital porter and raise funds to help enhance the hospital experience for patients, visitors and staff.
Sabrina Marsden, fundraising manager at Hampshire Hospitals Charity, said: “Our porters do a fantastic job and we wanted to highlight the contribution they make to our patients and colleagues with this challenge. It’s a tough one, but we think the people of Hampshire can do it – they just have to decide how!
“This month-long challenge is inclusive and open to everyone making it suitable for those in a wheelchair or with low mobility. To take part, simply choose the distance that suits you best, complete it however you want throughout September and then let us know how you get on.”
Taking part is easy and participants have the whole of September to complete the challenge. Simply choose to match a day, a week or a month’s worth of steps a porter takes, choose how you’ll complete the distance (you could walk, run, swim, cycle, hop, skip or jump) and then let the charity know when you’ve completed the challenge. To help raise important funds, as part of the Steptember challenge, those taking part are asked to gain sponsorship which can be done per step, per mile or a single amount for completing the challenge.
