Harnessing AI for Safe, Independent Ageing-in-Place

By Ohad Amir, CTO of Essence Group

Essence SmartCare, an early pioneer in AI innovation in senior care, is building a reality where seniors can age from the comfort of their own homes with the assurance that their safety is constantly monitored. Envisioning an ageing experience where AI enables seniors’ ability to age in place, Essence SmartCare utilises AI in a variety of ways to offer peace of mind for seniors and their loved ones so they can live their lives to the fullest without disruption.

At Essence SmartCare, the company mission is to create an environment where the products are nearly invisible, integrating so seamlessly into daily life that they go practically unnoticed. Essence believes in the beauty of human diversity, and its AI systems are designed to learn and adapt to the unique behaviours of each individual, celebrating differences while ensuring safety and independence.

Revolutionary AI Capabilities:

Care@Home PRO

Our journey with AI innovation began in 2015 with Care@Home PRO, a groundbreaking advancement in monitoring senior’s activities of daily living (ADL). Through a system of discreet, camera-less radars and sensors, our machine learning algorithm learns seniors’ routines, and alerts caregivers to deviations that may indicate an emergency or significant change in the individual’s health. The synergy between server-based predictions and on-device analysis ensures that our system functions as a cohesive, intelligent unit.

What sets Care@Home PRO apart from other existing devices is its comprehensive monitoring system that integrates ADL, emergency alerts, and remote patient monitoring within a single control panel. Moreover, our system is rigorously certified to meet the highest standards of emergency protocols, providing unparalleled reliability. This unique integration allows caregivers and family members to have a holistic view of an individual’s well-being, ensuring timely and appropriate responses are met to thwart any potential issues.

Umbrella mPERS

Umbrella mPERS is a wearable fall detection device that combines an accelerometer and a gyroscope to monitor speed and angular changes across three dimensions. This data is processed through a deep learning algorithm — a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) — to accurately detect falls while minimizing false alarms. Our extensive research, involving diverse populations, ensures a high level of accuracy in fall detection.

The key to Umbrella MPERS’s effectiveness lies in its comprehensive dataset, which includes men, women, and children of different sizes and ages. This diverse pool ensures that our AI model can accurately identify falls across a broad spectrum of scenarios.

Our AI capabilities makes our ability to accurately detect falls from waist height a key advantage over other existing fall detection devices. Our algorithm analyses acceleration and angle of falls, allowing users to choose where they want to place the device—whether around the neck as a necklace or on a belt clip. This flexibility allows our product to integrate seamlessly into people’s lives, maintaining preference, comfort and discretion.

MDSense

Boasting over 15 pending patents, MDSense is a non-wearable fall detection device that utilises RADAR technology to identify when a person is stuck lying on the floor. Trained on over 20,000 body positions with people of all sizes and ages, our deep learning model recognises falls with remarkable precision. MDSense’s battery-powered operation makes it uniquely easy to install and maintain without the need for electrical wiring.

Use of AI extends to the installation process itself. The device can analyse a room and create optimal parameters for the best performance. This capability simplifies the setup process, ensuring that the device functions effectively from the start.

Additionally, the fall radar technology used in MDSense features an exclusion zone capability, where it learns to ignore specific areas that do not signify a fall. This adaptive learning continues post-installation, accommodating changes in the room layout without requiring reconfiguration. For example, during initial deployments in Japan, the device initially mistook low beds for the floor. However, over time, it learned to differentiate between these beds and the actual floor, accurately identifying falls and excluding non-fall zones. This continuous learning ensures that MDSense remains highly accurate for different room configurations and changing environments.

Essence SmartCare’s radar technology is not just innovative in its fall detection; it represents a leap forward in non-wearable safety technology. By analysing vital signs and environmental factors, future iterations of the device will aim to prevent falls before they happen, alerting caregivers to potential dangers and allowing for proactive intervention.

C8000 Control Panel

The C8000 control panel is more than just an emergency alert system; it is a comprehensive control hub that integrates various monitoring devices to provide a cohesive user experience. With an intuitive interface, the panel allows users to manage their safety and health monitoring.

The latest version of our control panel includes advanced AI for improved voice activation. This helps the device better distinguish genuine calls for help from background noise or similar-sounding phrases. It also significantly reduces false alarms, which enhances the reliability of our emergency response system. The C8000 panel supports the ability for a person to call out loud for help instead of pushing a button, making assistance accessible even if users cannot reach the device’s emergency button. This improvement ensures that help is summoned when truly needed, providing greater peace of mind to users and their families.

The Future of AI in Connected Care

At Essence SmartCare, we are driven to create a future where AI not only monitors seniors’ safety but also empowers individuals to live their lives independently with a seamless user experience. Our commitment to continuous innovation means our AI systems will become even more intuitive and responsive, further blending into the fabric of everyday life.

We strive for a world where AI anticipates needs before they arise, providing an empowering safety net. This is the future we are building—a peaceful, independent aging experience enhanced by personalised technology.
