Hampshire Hospitals tops regional rankings for patient experience in new national survey

A recent national survey on urgent and emergency care has found that patients are positive about their overall experiences at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT).

Over 300 patients who attended an emergency department at Hampshire Hospitals in September 2022 responded as part of an urgent and emergency care survey carried out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The trust received the highest ranking in the region (South East England) for overall patient experience, with an overall experience score of 8.1 out of 10.

The survey, which sought feedback from patients covering a range of themes about the patient journey and their experiences from arrival to discharge, saw HHFT score either above or at the national average in all questions asked.

The trust also achieved an average score of 8.4 out of 10 for both cleanliness and information sharing, as well as an average of 9.4 out of 10 for explanation of medications.

Alex Whitfield, chief executive at Hampshire Hospitals, said: “There are real positives in the feedback we have received in the latest urgent and emergency care survey. We are hugely grateful to our patients who have taken the time to tell us about their experiences.

“Our staff continue to work exceptionally hard each and every day to care for our patients. People come to our emergency departments when they are in real need and it is very encouraging to see that the majority of people have a very positive experience of our care.

“However, we know that there are still challenges and occasions where we don’t get it right and, in such instances, we do all can to learn from what happens and ensure the same issues don’t reoccur. At all times we are wholly committed to doing all that we can to deliver outstanding care and a positive experience for everyone who needs us.”

The CQC urgent and emergency care survey reports on the experiences of people aged 16 and over who attended an NHS type 1 or type 3 urgent and emergency care service in England in September 2022, treated at 122 NHS trusts.

The survey follows similar surveys carried out by the organisation in 2016, 2018 and 2020.
