Free burn injury educational series launched for healthcare professionals

The first in a series of free educational webinars on burn injury wound assessment and care management for UK healthcare professionals will be launched next month.

The sessions will be led by leading burns experts and are set to cover the basics of burn wound injury assessment and management, the cost of recovery, scarring following a burn injury, how new technologies can improve care and outcomes for patients, disaster preparedness and dealing with mass casualties and combat casualties.

They have been organised by Spectral AI, the creators of the DeepView™ imaging system which is used in several UK NHS hospitals and employs artificial intelligence to give clinicians a healing assessment on day-one of a burn wound injury to help them make the best decision about treatment for patients.

The first event will take the form of a fireside chat between Burns and Plastic Surgery Specialist Nurse Krissie Stiles and Spectral AI’s Clinical Manager Lisa Wood.

Lisa, who is based at Spectral AI’s UK headquarters in Hertfordshire, said: “We know that getting an early accurate assessment of a burn wound injury and early treatment can make a huge difference to patients’ outcomes and can reduce the length of time they stay in hospital and their number of hospital admissions.

“These free educational webinars will help a wide range of healthcare professionals, including nurses, doctors and paramedics, and fire crews to enhance their knowledge of burn injury wound assessment and care.

“The first session will include who is at risk of burns, how to assess burn injury wound size and depth and when patients should be seen by specialists to give attendees a really good foundation in the subject.

“Over the course of the series we will build on this foundation to give attendees a comprehensive understanding of burn injury wound assessment and care management.”

Krissie Stiles, who will take part in the first webinar alongside Lisa, is also an Ambassador for the Children’s Burns Trust and a visiting lecturer.

She has authored national and regional clinical practice guidelines, been published in peer reviewed journals, is the co-creator of ‘The Burns Game’, the co-author of the ‘Saving Lives is Not Enough’ report and the author of ‘The Family Oops and Burns First Aid’.

The interactive one-hour session will include a live Q&A and will take place on Zoom from 12.30pm to 1.30pm on Thursday, August 8.
